| September 01, 2006 | | Thinking of a final road trip this summer? Here are 8 of the best road trip cars that are comfortable, safe...and a little fun. | If you've been thinking about taking that last road trip of the summer, in a brand new car, here are some of your best options. These vehicles, rated by CNNMoney's Peter Valdes-Dapena, are the best cars to take out on a long spin. The older models of a majority of these cars are just as reliable, so if your getting a used car, consider these makes.
The first step to picking out a car worthy of road trips, look for: Fuel Efficiency: Gas prices and the environment is a huge concern when choosing a vehicle.
Adequate Storage Space: This may fluctuate depending on a person's lifestyle, but if you’re going on a road trip, you need a car that can handle luggage and lots of it.
Comfort: Having a family, or a few buddies in the car for a long period of time, means that the car must be spacious and comfortable to seat more than one passenger.
Safety: This is a huge concern, especially when road trips are a consideration, as you are on the road for long periods of time. The car should be reliable, and have a good collision test rating. The top 8 road cars, according to Valdes-Dapena, are also well-performing. A car should be able to handle some roughness on a road trip; you never know what you may encounter.
The top 8 cars are as follows: • Mercedes-Benz S550 • Buick Lucerne CSX • Ford Mustang V-6 Convertible • Chrysler Pacifica Touring • Ford Crown Victoria LX Sport • Honda Civic EX Sedan • Jaguar XK8 Coupe • Chevrolet Corvette
