Bill and Jill Buy a Car

The male and female perspectives on car buying

Bill:

The last time I purchased a car, I did so without Jill’s knowledge.  Why? Well, I had wandered into a BMW dealer and knew that if Jill had come along, she would have not only loudly stated, “Are you sure we can afford this?” but she would do it just enough times to make sure everyone in the dealership had heard.  Going into the car dealership on my own, I had the confidence and the freedom to make the deal I wanted.

I took control of the situation, and told the salesman that I would buy the car only if he would deliver it that same day.  The salesman fell all over himself to accommodate me, and I drove off in my new Beamer Convertible that very evening.

Jill:

Last time Bill purchased a car he had $5000 burning a hole in his pocket (an old debt paid back in cash) and to top it off, the Jeep he was driving wouldn’t start. Bill, the schmuck that he is, wandered into the BMW dealership next door, and actually bought the first car that they showed him! I cannot believe how distracted men get around shiny objects. Apparently Bill was distracted enough to give away buckets of money, which should have probably gone to our mortgage payments and food budget. He didn’t even bother to haggle, which dealerships expect you to do, and financed through BMW leasing at an outrageous rate of 11%.  When he got home I asked what his lease rate was and not only did he not want to tell me, but he couldn’t look me in the eye. The car he brought home was a 2 door convertible, with something that I don’t think could even really be passed off as a backseat.  He is obsessed with that car! He even washes it 3 times a week, for $15 a go. The old Jeep was lucky if I got washed once a month.

When we finally planned a vacation, we had to rent a car a few weeks after buying the BMW, because we couldn’t fit our luggage or the gifts we had for relatives in the trunk.

After this ordeal, and after the discussions we had about this impulsive behaviour, you would think Bill may have learned from this, but then he decides to buy a house while I am on vacation! I swear, I don’t know what goes on in that head of his, but maybe I’ll save that story for another blog.
